The State Law Enforcement Division has presented its Distinguished Associate Award to the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department’s K9 team.

The award notes LCSD’s significant contribution to the SLED Tracking Unit in the form of customized training assistance to a SLED special agent and his K9.

“This award represents the strong relationship between SLED and the Sheriff’s Department,” Lexington County Jay Koon said. “We’re always willing to assist SLED and they routinely offer support to us in many ways.”

According to Koon, LCSD’s K9 unit responds to calls for assistance from other law enforcement agencies across the Midlands.

The unit consists of seven deputies and eight K9’s. Six K9’s are used for narcotics detection, tracking and patrol work; one is specially trained to detect explosives; and a bloodhound is used exclusively for tracking.
