As the oldest Baby Boomers turn 70 this year, it’s a reminder that America’s population is aging like never before.

Boomers hitting 70 and their counterparts from previous generations are susceptible to what’s come to be known as elder abuse.

I’m not talking about financial fraud or someone taking advantage of a senior in a business sense, I’m talking about physical abuse and neglect.

These are the telltale signs that usually mean some form of elder abuse is taking place.

■ Physical injuries – If you’ve seen large bruises on the face, neck, forearms or back, some form of physical harm has more than likely taken place. Broken bones, cuts or burns are also indicators that someone is hurting your loved one.

■ Hygiene changes – If you’ve noticed a drop in the daily upkeep of your loved one’s personal appearance and surroundings, that’s worth looking into.

■ Unexpected weight loss or weight gain.

■ Unwillingness to talk to friends or loved ones or an avoidance of certain topics.

■ Withdrawal from the person’s normal activities not explained by age alone.

Most people respect their elders. Unfortunately, some people abuse them. If you suspect a senior in your life has been abused or neglected, please call the Sheriff’s Department at 785-8230. Remember, you do not have to prove abuse is taking place before sharing the information with us.
