The summer is a common time for families to move or get rid of some clutter. During the warmer months, it’s common to see signs for garage and yard sales.

Whether you’re getting rid of some items to help with a move or simply want to clean up, remember these four steps to make sure you safely sell your things.

During a yard or garage sale, not every customer might have good intentions. It’s important to pay attention at all times and not get too comfortable, which can happen when you’re at home.

  1. If you’re selling the items out front or in your garage, remember to lock all doors leading into your home. When there’s a handful of people walking around, it can be difficult to keep track of where everyone is.
  2. Make sure to keep a phone near you at all times in case of an emergency. Running to the door, unlocking it and then finding a phone can use up valuable time.
  3. Try not to use a cash box unless you have someone whose sole duty is to guard it.  Even if you hide it and walk away, it could be very easy for someone to find it and walk off.
  4. Lastly, remember to enlist the help of a friend or family member to help for the sale. This way, you don’t have to worry about items going missing if you need to step inside.

These are just a few simple things to keep in mind if you plan to host a garage sale. They might seem like common sense, but it can be very easy to let your guard down when you’re in your front yard.
