It’s been more than two years since 22-year-old Shirley McKenzie was shot and killed inside a former Lexington County nightclub. Twenty eight months later, no arrests have been made.

“Just because time moves on doesn’t mean the case ever closes,” said Sgt. Shaun Spivey of the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department. “We’re going to continue to pursue because our job is to find the people that were involved in this and bring them to justice.”

Detectives know the bar was full when the gunfire began, but most people took off before first responders arrived.

“There are several witnesses that we feel did see the incident take place, but the problem is for whatever reason they’re not wanting to come forth and to talk to police,” Spivey said.

The few tips that have come in refer to people by nicknames and don’t lead anywhere. Spivey is asking people who know something to think of McKenzie’s family.

“We feel like people should be able to relate to how the family here is feeling at this moment. They’re still hurting, they express that every time whenever they speak to us, they’re hurting,” Spivey said. “They want some justice, they want some answers to be able to give them some kind of closure in this matter.”

Spivey said all tips will remain anonymous through Crimestoppers, but tipsters should try to be as specific as possible.
