LEXINGTON, S.C. – As the holiday shopping season kicks into high gear, the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department is reminding shoppers to stay alert and take simple steps to avoid becoming victims of theft or fraud.

“This time of year always brings concerns about safety,” Lexington County Sheriff Jay Koon said. “Crowded stores, packed parking lots and a rush to finish gift buying can make you an easy target for someone looking to steal your money, your merchandise or your identity. A little awareness goes a long way.”
Safe shopping tips:
· Thieves look for people who are alone. Shop with a friend or family member when you can.
· Let someone know where you are going and when you expect to be home.
· Keep cash in a front pocket instead of in a purse or wallet. Carry your keys in a pocket so you can still get home if a bag is stolen.
· If you do not feel comfortable walking to your vehicle alone, ask store security to escort you.
Koon said financial fraud crimes tend to increase between Thanksgiving and the end of the year as shoppers move quickly from store to store and spend more time online.
“During the holidays it’s easy to get distracted, and that’s when criminals strike,” Koon said.
Credit and debit card protection tips:
· Watch your card every time you use it and put it away as soon as the transaction is done.
· Never write your PIN on your card or store it in your wallet.
· Do not leave cards or receipts lying around.
· Shield your card number from anyone nearby who could photograph it.
· Carry only the cards you need for the day.
· Shred paperwork that includes your card number.
Gift cards also remain a target for criminals during the holidays.
“Gift cards are easy to buy, easy to give and that makes them attractive to thieves,” Koon said. “A few extra seconds of caution can protect your money.”
Gift card purchase tips:
· Buy cards only from businesses you know and trust. Avoid online auction sites.
· Read the terms and conditions before you buy. Look for fees tied to purchase, shipping or inactivity.
· Check the card to make sure protective stickers are intact and codes have not been exposed. Report damaged cards to the store.
· Give the recipient your original receipt so they can verify the purchase if the card is lost or stolen.
Anyone who sees suspicious activity in or around a store should call 911. To report financial fraud, call the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department at 803-785-8230.
