The Lexington County Sheriff’s Department has begun its observance of National Correctional Officer and Employees Week.

“This week is an opportunity to recognize the important work our correctional officers and civilian employees do in the Lexington County Detention Center,” Sheriff Jay Koon said. “The facility is, in essence, a small city and it takes a team effort to keep it going.

“Our staff puts in a tremendous effort every day to keep inmates safely housed and properly fed,” he said. “They keep other important functions, such as laundry and custodial services, running smoothly.”

Koon said a lunch or dinner will be provided for each shift in the jail, in addition to one full breakfast for each shift.

National Correctional Officers and Employees week was designated by President Ronald Reagan in 1984. Observed annually during the first full week of May, it is designed to provide correctional employees, particularly direct contact line staff, the respect and recognition that they deserve.

Lexington County Council adopted a resolution last week to observe the week of appreciation as a way to acknowledge correctional officers’ service to the community.
